Of course, we had to stop along the river to
play. |

Eventually, we had to get back to work.
With 17 miles to cover on the 1st day and 11 on the 2nd, we had to
keep up the pace. |

There were several places, especially on the 2nd
day, where tangles of downed trees produced obstacles we had to work
around. |
 |
First we needed to get out and walk around the
obstruction to find the safest way through. Then we had to
actually get through without getting dumped into the river. |

Now here's a story for you. As we pushed
down the river on Sunday morning, one of the Scouts spotted a young
calf stranded half in the water at the bottom of a steep and muddy
bank. The calf was so tired it barely moved as we approached
it. The calf was carefully picked up and placed in a canoe for
a ride about 75 yards downriver to a sandbar. Once there, the
calf was carried up a well worn cattle path and reunited with its
herd. Even with the rescue mission, we were only 9 minutes
behind schedule when we arrived at Duncan's Camp to meet our ride
back to Grimes Canoe Base. |
|
All in all, it was an excellent float. We
had two individuals who earned their 75 mile bars, two who earned
their 50 miles bars, and four who earned a 25 mile patch.
